Hundreds of people commemorated former HEP (People's Labour Party) Diyarbakır president Vedat Aydın.
Vedat Aydın was found dead on a road near Malatya on July 7, 1991. Aydın's murder is believed to have been committed by an illegal organization inside the gendarmerie known as JİTEM, which exploited the vast powers granted to it as part of counterterrorism efforts to terrorize locals and control and participate in illegal commercial activity in the region.
JITEM (Gendarmerie Intelligence and Counterterrorism) is a wing of the Turkish Police-Military (Gendarmerie) active in the Turkey-PKK conflict. Officially it does not exist, however this claim is widely rejected outside official circles.
In July 2011, Ankara Public Prosecutor Hakan Yüksel found that JİTEM, whose existence has been denied so far by the General Staff and other state institutions, was secretly established by the Gendarmerie General Command to fight against "terrorism". JİTEM is believed to have been responsible for thousands of unsolved murders in eastern and southeastern Turkey in the 1990s.
When Aydın's body was discovered, his head was smashed, and there were eight bullets in his body. He was immediately buried by the Maden Municipality, and it was later discovered that it was Aydın's body. After examinations were conducted, Aydın was re-buried on July 10, 1991. Unidentified people opened fire on the crowd attending Aydın's funeral, leaving three people dead and injuring many others.
Amed Metropolitan Municipality Co-mayors Fırat Anlı and Gülten Kışanak, HDP Amed deputy Çağlar Demirel, DBP and HDP co-chairs of Amed branch, İHD Diyarbakır Branch Chair Raci Bilici, members of MEYADER and Peace Mothers Initiative, as well as Vedat Aydın's brother Veysi Aydın, his son Felat Aydın and a large number of people attended the commemoration to pay respect to the ever loved leader.
Speaking here, Veysi Aydın stated that the murder of his brother was an attempt to perpetrate a massacre of the Kurdish people in the person of Vedat Aydın, to intimidate and suppress the Kurds as he was a leading figure and played a major role in the struggle of his people.
Remarking that 18 thousand people have been killed since the murder of his brother, Veysi Aydın stressed that the Turkish state must apologize to the Kurdish people for the resolution of the Kurdish question.
Vedat Aydın's son Felat Aydın, who said he knew his father only from the telling of his family members, told that; “At first, I used to think how my father could ever leave his son and help others. Then, when I grew up, I felt ashamed of myself for thinking so. The Kurdish freedom struggle has reached a very important phase today thanks to the struggle of my father and others. The only lacking point is the unity of the four parts of Kurdistan and waging an all-together struggle.”
