The vigil for the freedom of the Kurdish Leader Abdullah Öcalan, held in front of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, and which is the longest activity of the Kurdish people in Europe, has been going on for 1065 days.

The vigil for the freedom of the Kurdish Leader Abdullah Öcalan in front of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, which is the longest activity of the Kurdish people in Europe, has been going on for 1065 days. This week the vigil has been taken over by members of the European Kurdish Women’s Movement, TJKE.

The vigil, which is now in its 153rd week, was taken over on Sunday by the members of TJKE. The women are informing the public in front of the EP about the life of the Kurdish Leader and his struggle as well as the Rojava revolution and the importance of the 7 June elections in Turkey. The women also talk to people about the rising struggle of Kurdish women.

Speaking on behalf of TJKE at a press conference in front of the parliament, Hezil Amara said the freedom of the Kurdish Leader means at the same time the freedom of Kurdish women as well as the freedom of women of the world.

Amara drew attention to the fact that it is women who are mainly targeted by the ISIS gangs in the Middle East and put in the trap of cultural genocide, and stressed the importance of stepping up the struggle for women’s liberation against the brutal attacks of the capitalist system on women.

Amara said the only way to defeat the policies aiming at feminicide is engaging in an active struggle, and building democratic confederalism, which makes a new life possible for women.

TJKE further said a new life would be possible for the women living in Turkey and North Kurdistan by uniting around the HDP, and called on all women to vote for the HDP. Stressing the importance of every vote, Amara said; “Each vote has the power to stop the war and the killings”.

The members of TJKE take over the vigil for the freedom of Öcalan at least once a month. The freedom vigil started on 25 June 2012. Hundreds of thousands of brochures and leaflets have been distributed so far during the vigil actions. Personal talks have been carried out with tens of thousands of people as well during the vigil which is held in Robertsau Street where the EP and ECHR are located.
