An international campaign titled 'I want to visit Abdullah Öcalan' was launched in early June under the initiative of the European Freedom and Peace Platform (EFFP), calling for in-person visits to be allowed with Abdullah Öcalan at Imralı Prison. As part of the campaign, official requests will be submitted to Turkey’s Ministry of Justice. In addition, video messages will be shared on social media to support the appeal. The organizers call on the international public to support the current process for democracy and peace in Turkey through the resolution of the Kurdish Question. In doing so, they recognize the historic opportunity created by Abdullah Öcalan in his February 27 call for “Peace and a Democratic Society”, and the necessity of his full participation in such a process going forward.
As part of the process that began with the February 27 call, a delegation of approximately 50 internationally recognized personalities is traveling to Istanbul.
The international delegation traveling to Istanbul to discuss the “process” will include academics, trade unionists, civil society organization members, journalists, lawyers, parliamentarians, feminists, scientists, writers, researchers, and municipal officials from Austria, Germany, Italy, Spain, Catalonia, France, Switzerland, and Japan.
The delegation's visits and meetings will begin on July 1. The delegation will first visit the Asrın Law Office and meet with Öcalan’s lawyers. The delegation will then meet with DEM Party co-chair Tuncer Bakırhan at the party's Istanbul provincial organization. An exchange of views is expected to take place with both the Asrın Law Office and Tuncer Bakırhan.
On July 2, a roundtable meeting with the delegation will be held at the Taksim Hill Hotel, where all participants are expected to speak and share their views and suggestions on the process. Following the meeting, a declaration on the process is also expected to be announced.
The delegation will also submit an official request to visit İmralı as part of the international campaign “I want to visit Abdullah Öcalan.”
