The Northern Kurdish Women's Unity Platform held its 3rd Conference in Amed (tr: Diyarbakır) on June 21-22 under the slogan “Bi yekîtiya jinên Kurd, ber bi yekîtiya neteweyî ve” (Kurdish women's unity leads to national unity). The conference, attended by 101 delegates, emphasized the pioneering role of women in the construction of national unity and a democratic society.
The conference highlighted the historical resistance of Kurdish women and their vital connection with nature. Emphasizing the role of women in peace, production, and social organization, the conference stressed that “there can be no freedom and peace without women”.
The conference, held amid conflicts and crisises in the region, assessed developments in the Middle East and the oppression of the Kurdish people. It drew attention to the Iran-Israel war and Turkey's policy toward the Kurds, highlighting the importance of women's peaceful resistance in this process.
The conference ended with a call to uphold Abdullah Öcalan’s roadmap for “Peace and Democratic Society.” Women reiterated their determination to expand the struggle with the philosophy of “Jin, Jiyan, Azadî” (Woman, Life, Freedom).
The final declaration listed the decisions taken at the conference as follows:
“1. Kurdish Women's Unity
The struggle of Kurdish women in the national, cultural, and social spheres is the legacy of historical struggle and the result of current political needs. Today, the establishment of the Kurdish Women's Unity is more than a choice; it is a historical responsibility that every Kurdish woman must bear in the face of the policies of denial, genocide, and oppression against the Kurdish people. The conference will transcend the boundaries of this union, bring together the experiences of Kurdish women from all corners of Kurdistan, strengthen their organization, reevaluate their structure, and make them the most dynamic and transformative force in the construction of national unity.
2. The Role of Women in Preserving and Transmitting Kurdish Culture
Kurdish women, who are the bearers, creators, and transmitters of Kurdish culture, also have a historical responsibility to pass on this heritage to future generations. Women must play their role as the creative and transmitting agents of culture. From songs to folk costumes and bracelets, from food to folklore, every aspect of Kurdish identity has been enriched by women's labor. Our conference decided that women must play a greater role in cultural production and that cultural traditions and gender knowledge systems should be revitalized by women. Additionally, for cultural and artistic unity, international culture and art festivals should be held annually in a different part of Kurdistan.
3. The Role of Women in the Preservation and Development of the Kurdish Language
The preservation and development of the Kurdish language is fundamental to national identity. Women play a central role in the transmission of language within the family, in education, in literature, and in media production. In this context, our conference has decided that women who carry the responsibility of passing on the Kurdish language to new generations should become the subjects of local Kurdish language initiatives, bring them together in a network, expand the struggle for language, fight against the approach that “Kurdish is a rare and not a scientific language.”, and become the most ardent defenders of the demand for education in the mother tongue and the preservation of the Kurdish language. Kurdish must be a language of education and a status for the Kurdish people.
4. Combating Violence and Genocide Against Women
The multifaceted violence against Kurdish women is not only gender-based; it also has national, class, and political dimensions. The state’s security policies, militarism, poverty, forced displacement, and cultural appropriation have encircled the bodies and lives of Kurdish women. Our conference has decided to raise awareness about self-defense at the local and national levels against these multifaceted attacks, strengthen women's solidarity networks, and build a common line of struggle. Not only a legal struggle, but also an organized social struggle can be a strong bulwark against violence.
5. Women's Mission in Building Peace and a Democratic Society
Women, who pay the heaviest price in times of war, are also the builders of peace and democratic life. We, Kurdish women, say that with the silence of weapons, a peaceful and lasting peace process must begin, in which justice is established and rights are secured on the basis of equal citizenship. Our conference has stated that one of the main goals of this platform is to play an active role in the process of building a democratic society based on the democratic, ecological, and women's libertarian perspective of Leader Abdullah Öcalan, and to increase regional, national, and international women's solidarity in this regard.
Our 3rd Kurdish Women's Unity Platform Conference declares a new era by bringing together the Kurdish women’s collective memory, struggle experiences, and hopes for the future. National unity, the struggle for culture and language, the protection of free life, and the construction of peace are the fundamental pillars of this period. The strength and experience of the Kurdish women's struggle, which has reached this level, can also play a significant role in building a democratic society. Free women, free society, free culture and language ensure free identity. Long live the unity of Kurdish women! Long live the common struggle of Kurdish women! Jin Jiyan Azadî!”
