A suicide bomber exploded himself during Sunday mass at the Mar Elias Church, in the Diwêla district in eastern Damascus.

The attacker entered the church and first opened fire on worshipers with a Kalashnikov, and then detonated an explosive belt.

Security sources reported that at least 15 people were killed and 15 others injured. Some local media outlets stated that children were among the wounded.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack. However, the Syrian Ministry of Interior stated that a member of ISIS entered the church, shot at people inside, and then blew himself up using an explosive vest.

This incident marks the first suicide bombing in Damascus since the downfall of Bashar al-Assad's rule in December.
