Workers have taken to the streets in Tehran despite a ban on May 1 celebrations.
Workers in Iran had appealed to the Tehran Governorate a week ago to celebrate May 1 in Tehran. Iranian officials and the Governorate did not give permission for the celebrations, but workers in and around Tehran started to gather in front of the Workers’ House in Tehran early this morning. Iranian security forces attempted to intervene.
“IRAN HAS A BAD POLICY TOWARDS WORKERS”
Iranian Workers Unions Chairperson Hasan Sadiqi protested the decision and said the workers want to draw attention to the problems they have and celebrate the day celebrated globally, and added that they don’t plan on complying with the ban. Sadiqi said: “Iran has very bad policies towards workers. We are not allowed to celebrate our day and democratically demand our rights. No country on earth has this ban, workers take to the streets and celebrate the day, but ours is banned.”
“DOWN WITH THE HEGEMONS”
Sadiqi had a short discussion with the security forces and then made a statement, after which the thousands gathered in front of the Tehran Workers’ House started to march towards the Republic Avenue, chanting “Down with the hegemons”.
