TEV-DEM calls for an international investigation into Turkey’s crimes in North-East Syria

The Press Council of the Democratic Society Movement (TEV-DEM) strongly condemned the occupying Turkish state’s attacks against journalists and called for international action.

Kurdish journalist Egîd Roj was killed in a Turkish kamikaze drone attack in Northern Syria. The journalist, who was in his late twenties, was last reporting from the Euphrates front about the attacks by the Turkish army and the jihadist militia SNA on the self-administered region of northern and eastern Syria. He also covered the hostilities at the Tishrin Dam, which is currently the focus of a Turkish-jihadist offensive.

Egîd Roj is one of three journalists who have been killed while carrying out their work in the northeast Syrian autonomous region by NATO member Turkey in drone attacks since December. On 19 December 2024, his two colleagues, Nazım Daştan and Cihan Bilgin, were killed by a drone strike, also near the Euphrates front. Daştan worked for ANF, while Bilgin was a correspondent for ANHA. Another journalist, Aziz Köyllüoğlu, who also worked in Rojava, was killed in a Turkish drone attack in South Kurdistan at the end of January.

The Press Council of the Democratic Society Movement (TEV-DEM) released a statement strongly condemning the occupying Turkish state’s attacks against journalists and calling for international action.

In a written statement on Sunday, the TEV-DEM Press Council said, “With their cameras and reports, journalists are exposing the lies and allegations of the bloody war waged by the occupying Turkish state. The journalists also report on the legendary resistance of the SDF and the strong will of the people of North and East Syria and their commitment to the achievements. For this reason, they are targeted by the fascist Turkish state, which violates all international laws.”

Paying tribute to the journalists killed since the invading Turkish state launched attacks on Tishrin (Martyrs Dam) on December 8, TEV-DEM stated the following: “Journalists Cihan Bilgin and Nazim Daştan were martyred in an attack by the occupying Turkish state on the road from Tishrin Dam to Sirrin city. Yesterday (February 15, 2025), journalist Egîd Roj from the occupied Afrin city was martyred by the occupying Turkish state at the Resistance Dam (Tishrin Dam). This once again shows the fascist Turkish state's fear of the free press and reveals its brutality.”

Vowing to march on the path of the free press, TEV-DEM Press Council condemned the silence of international powers against the attacks by the occupying Turkish state.

TEV-DEM Press Council called on the legal, humanitarian and United Nations institutions to establish an independent committee to monitor and evaluate the crimes committed by the occupying Turkish state against the people of the region and the targeting of journalists.
