TJA launches International Women's Day events in Şırnak

Women from Botan organized an event for International Women's Day, protesting femicide and marching toward freedom.

The Free Women's Movement (TJA) launched its International Women's Day events in Şırnak (Şirnex) with the slogan "We organize peace through women's struggle for freedom." Numerous women and representatives from various institutions gathered in front of the Şırnak branch of the Confederation of Public Employees' Unions (KESK) building.

Women attended the event dressed in traditional clothing, chanting slogans and performing traditional dances accompanied by celebratory ululations. A banner reading "We rebel against femicide, marching towards freedom" was displayed, while the crowd repeatedly chanted "Jin, jiyan, azadî" (Woman, Life, Freedom).

Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) Şırnak Provincial co-chair Nurcan Altürk said: "Those who are afraid cannot write history. We have strength, and we trust ourselves. The entire world is watching the Kurdish struggle with admiration. Hope is more important than success, and we fully believe that we will prevail. Slavery is not our fate, and we refuse to accept it."

TJA activist Adalet Çimen Fidan emphasized that Abdullah Öcalan's freedom would mean freedom for all women and stated that "on 8 March, we will raise our voices everywhere, shouting ‘Jin, jiyan, azadî’ according to the free women's paradigm. They want to push young women into prostitution through psychological warfare, but we will intensify our struggle against these tactics. As women, we will never bow down. Severe isolation is being imposed in all prisons, particularly on Imrali. We, as women, will lead the struggle to end this isolation and achieve Öcalan’s physical freedom."

DEM Party Şırnak MP Newroz Uysal Aslan said: "We salute the women resisting in Tishrin. Those who speak of solutions must first recognize the will of the Kurdish people. As Abdullah Öcalan has stated, society cannot be free unless women are free.

A recent news article by Mezopotamya Agency described how gangs in Şırnak force women into prostitution. A case has been opened against 25 individuals. We will closely follow this case and intensify our fight against all such dirty practices."
