War crimes committed by the Turkish state in northern Syria are exposed at the Permanent People's Tribunal in Brussels.
The first day of the Permanent People's Tribunal continued in the afternoon with the presentation by Basque lawyer Urko Aiartza Azurtza on "Bombardment and Following Occupation of the villages of Tal Abyad (Girê Spî) and Ras al- Ayn (Serê Kaniyê) during Operation Peace Spring: Use of white phosphorous and occupation displacement and ethnic engineering."
Lawyer Aiartza said: "On October 9, 2019, Turkish artillery and airstrikes began targeting the Serê Kaniyê and Tal Abyad regions, causing panic and disruption among the population and leading to the flight of civilians. On the same day, Turkish forces and their allied Syrian armed factions began their advance. The ongoing forced displacement resulted in the evacuation of approximately 138,000 individuals from the Serê Kaniyê and Tal Abyad areas alone.
During the recent military operation conducted by Turkish forces, substantial evidence has emerged indicating the use of internationally banned weapons. Reports from medical facilities and eyewitness accounts have documented numerous injuries consistent with the use of prohibited munitions, further substantiating claims of violations of international law. Medical reports from local hospitals treating casualties from the operation have consistently indicated injuries characteristic of those caused by banned weapons. Specifically, the nature of the burns and trauma sustained by the victims aligns with the effects of weapons such as white phosphorus or incendiary bombs, which are prohibited under various international treaties due to their severe and indiscriminate impact on civilians and combatants alike.”
