DEM Party co-chairs will apply to the Ministry of Justice to visit imprisoned politicians

DEM Party co-chairs Tülay Hatimoğulları and Tuncer Bakırhan will apply to the Ministry of Justice to visit several imprisoned politicians, including Ekrem Imamoğlu, Bekir Kaya, and Can Atalay.

The co-chairs of the Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party), Tülay Hatimoğulları and Tuncer Bakırhan, and the party's deputy chair responsible for local politics, Mehmet Rüştü Tiryaki, will submit a request to the Ministry of Justice to visit several imprisoned politicians and dismissed elected officials in Silivri Prison in Istanbul.

According to the information provided, the request concerns, among others, the following politicians: Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu of the CHP, mayor of Istanbul’s Esenyurt district, Ahmet Özer of the CHP, former co-mayor of Van, Bekir Kaya of the DBP, and Can Atalay, TIP member of parliament for Hatay, who was sentenced to a long prison term in connection with the Gezi Park protests. Political prisoners such as Halil Aksoy and Ahmet Saymadı are also on the party co-chairs’ list of people to visit.

The DEM Party justifies its plan with political and human rights concerns regarding the situation of the detainees, many of whom, in the party's view, have been unjustly deprived of their liberty. The exact timing of the visits depends on the ministry's decision.
