Die Linke MEP: Turkey’s attacks on Afrin are unacceptable

Die Linke member in the European Parliament (EP) Martina Michels issued a statement and stressed that Erdoğan’s Turkey stockpiling large scale forces to attack Afrin and its surrounding villages is unacceptable.

The statement issued by EP-Turkey Relations Delegation Member MEP Martina Michels stresses that the PYD and YPG are the “thorn in the eye” for Erdoğan’s “fantasies of great power”.

The statement titled “Erdoğan sends German tanks against Kurdish autonomy” demands the EU to call for the military attacks to stop and states that Erdoğan wants to complete his dreams of suppressing the demands for rights in Northern Kurdistan by attacking the rights of Kurds in Syria and Iraq in recent years.

The statement stresses that Erdoğan will be declaring war on not just the NATO and the international public, but also the victories against ISIS, Al-Nusra and other gangs.

Michels’ statement says Erdoğan’s interventions will not only harm stability in the region but also indefinitely postpone the peaceful solution of the issues Kurds and other peoples have within Turkey. The statement says Erdoğan and Syrian regime’s leader Assad are sharing areas of activity in the East under the supervision of Russian President Vladimir Putin and that this will have a toll on the civilians who remain in the area.

The statement by the Die Linke MEP points out that the European Union should reconsider Turkey’s security interests and what the country has been doing. The statement concludes with saying the solution to the Syrian issue will come through a long-term struggle against radical Islamist gangs and that the PKK should be removed from the terrorist organizations list because of that.
