Mersin's Akdeniz district municipality co-mayors Hoşyar Sarıyıldız and Nuriye Arslan and city council members Özgür Çağlar, Neslihan Oruç, Yakup Danış and Hikmet Bakırhan were detained early on Friday morning.
DEM Party Mersin Deputy Ali Bozan said that an 'official' announcement regarding the appointment of a trustee to the municipality had not been made yet and added: "There is a 24-hour lawyer restriction decision on the file. Lawyers cannot meet with their clients. We don’t know what is in the file. There is no official information or statement about a trustee being appointed. I went to the front of the municipality while it was being raided. An authorized police officer there told me that it was forbidden to enter the municipality by the trustee's decision. "
Bozan added: "We have to assume that a trustee has been appointed de facto. No one is allowed to enter the municipality. For example, even citizens who want to pay their taxes cannot enter the municipality right now. There was a municipal council meeting on Friday, so the councillors, naturally, wanted to enter the municipality, but they were not allowed. We will remain in front of the municipality. We are calling on our people to join us."
