HDK: The government does not recognise the will of the people

HDK Co-spokesperson Meral Danış Beştaş condemned the police operation against Akdeniz Municipality and said, “The fact that the trustee coup has almost turned into a regime shows that the government does not recognise the will of the people.”

The Peoples' Democratic Congress (HDK) Co-spokesperson Meral Danış Beştaş protested the detention of Akdeniz District Municipality Co-Mayors Nuriye Aslan and Hoşyar Sarıyıldız and the police blockade of the municipality building.

In a statement on her social media account, Meral Danış Beştaş stated: “The detention of Akdeniz Co-Mayors Nuriye Aslan and Hoşyar Sarıyıldız has once again revealed the government's insistence on the trustee coup, which ignores the will of the people. It is obvious that the appointment of trustees has been defeated by the will of the people in every election. The fact that the trustee coup has almost turned into a regime shows once again that the current government does not recognise democratic legitimacy and the will of the people. We call on the government to stop appointing trustees and to be consistent. Insisting on this practice leads to a questioning of not only the government, but also democracy, the trust of the people, and the will for peace and solution. It is the duty of not only political parties and democratic organisations but also of everyone to protect the will of the people under all circumstances. We will always continue to defend and struggle for the right to peace and the will of the people...”
