YPJ Commander Songül Kurt and YPG fighters İsmail Dere and Seraceddin Çelik, who lost their lives in the operation launched in Til Temir and Hesekê by the YPG against the ISIS gangs, were laid to rest yesterday in the Yüksekova district of Hakkari. Tens of thousands of people attended the ceremony, condemning ISIS and the Turkish president Erdoğan.
YPJ Commander Songül Kurt (Hêvî Gever Marînos) and the YPG fighters İsmail Dere (Ciwan Şiyar) and Seraceddin Çelik (Ciwan Şiyar) lost their lives in clashes that took place between 16-22 May against ISIS gangs in the scope of the operation launched in towns of Til Temir and Hesekê in the Cizîrê canton of Rojava. The bodies of the fighters were taken by the families after the completion of procedures in the Amed Forensic Institute, and taken to the Yüksekova district of Hakkari. A convoy of hundreds of vehicles accompanied the families to the district, while people in the villages on the route greeted the fighters by flooding onto the streets and chanting the slogan “Martyrs are immortal”.
Thousands of people joined the convoy in the town centre, where the shutters of the shops were closed. Following a religious ceremony in the mosque, the fighters were taken to the cemetery by around thirty thousand people carrying the posters of the fighters and the Kurdish leader Öcalan as well as PKK, KCK, YPG and YPJ flags. People chanted slogans during the march condemning the ISIS gangs and the Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for his support for ISIS.
At the entrance to the cemetery the youth held a ceremony, vowing to continue the struggle of those who have fallen in the liberation struggle.
Speaking at the ceremony, MEYADER representative Cengiz Ortaç said all those who fell in the liberation struggle were fighting for the liberation of all the Kurdish people and for their future, adding that the Kurdish people will remain faithful to the legacy left by those who've fallen.
Speaking on behalf of the families, the father of YPJ commander Songül Kurt, Salih Kurt, said the three youths are the children of Kurdistan, adding that they have made them proud by their honourable struggle.
People of the district will be offering condolences for three days in the Orman and Güngör neighbourhoods.
In the meantime, the shopkeepers did not open their shops after the ceremony despite the calls of the HDP and DBP executives not to leave the shutters closed.
