Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan’s call for “Peace and Democratic Society”, which was announced by the İmralı delegation of the DEM Party on February 27, continues to receive international support. Another support for the historic call came from Switzerland, which is known for its role as a mediator and observer between the parties in the peace negotiations that have developed after periods of war and conflict.
The Swiss Federal Council (Government) has responded to the parliamentary question recently submitted by Fabian Molina, Member of the Federal Parliament and Member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, titled “How does Switzerland support the peace process between Turkey and the PKK?”.
Pointing to the importance of Öcalan’s call for peace in Turkey, the Federal Council said: “We welcome the call made by Abdullah Öcalan on February 27, 2025, which can offer a perspective for achieving peace. Switzerland is ready to play the role of mediator and offer goodwill services if requested by all parties and make a concrete contribution.”
Responding to MP Fabian Moline’s question, “What is Switzerland doing to ensure that Abdullah Öcalan is kept in humanitarian conditions during the peace process?”, the Federal Council said: “Regarding the detention conditions of Abdullah Öcalan, Switzerland supports the implementation of the recommendations of the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT). At the Council of Europe and the Organization for Security in Europe (OSCE), Switzerland regularly calls on Turkey to respect its human rights obligations and the rule of law.”
