Shengal people: Recognize self-government, cancel the agreement

A demonstration has been held in Shengal to protest against the planned dissolution of the autonomous administration and the security forces. The population demands the recognition of their structures and a dissolution of the Baghdad-Hewlêr agreement.

This Saturday, another demonstration took place in Shengal (Sinjar) against the planned dissolution of the autonomous administration and the Yazidi security forces. The people gathered in front of the Red Madrassa and marched loudly to the headquarters of the Asayîşa Êzîdxanê, where the demonstration culminated in a rally. Speeches demanded the annulment of the agreement on the future of Shengal reached in October between South Kurdistan’s ruling party KDP and the Iraqi central government under pressure from the United States and Turkey.

Xezal Reşo, co-chair of the Democratic Autonomous Council of Shengal (MXDŞ), said the following with regard to the vigil in front of the office of the Yazidi security forces, which has now been taking place for 25 days: "For weeks, we have been trying to make ourselves heard for our collective concern, namely to prevent the dissolution of the self-governing structures of our region that we have built up on our own. But there has been no concession at the Iraqi government level so far. Instead, the government in Baghdad is stationing new forces here to keep us in fear. We are not afraid and will continue to make our demands loudly."

In her speech, the spokesperson of the Yazidi women's movement TAJÊ, Sebîhe Sebrî, pointed out that Yazidi women in particular are threatened by a renewed extermination attack; "The social resistance of Yazidis and the struggle against gender-based violence is of existential importance from this perspective."

Xalid Osman, one of the leaders of the Asayîşa Êzîdxanê, reiterated his institution's intention to continue its resistance for the defense of the region. "Those who do not accept the will of the people of Shengal need not expect recognition from us," Osman said.
