Seven Kurds sentenced each to 6 years in prison over magazines

A Turkish court sentenced seven Kurds each to 6 years and 3 months in prison on alleged charges of “membership to an illegal organization” for possessing Özgür Halk (Free Folk) and Demokratik Yurtsever Gençlik (Democratic Patriotic Youth) magazines.

Turkish Supreme Court announced the verdict on case of Şaban Akyüz, Murat İş, Mesut Eren, Veysel Bilgi, Özgür Deniz, Murat Akgün and Kenan Çalışkan; who had been detained back in 2011 for their political activities.

The court upheld the verdict of the 4th Heavy Penal Court in Van which had sentenced each of the seven Kurdish youths to 6 years and 3 months in prison.

Lawyers said the only material evidence on the case was two magazines that were found at the homes of the youths, Özgür Halk (Free Folk) and Demokratik Yurtsever Gençlik (Democratic Patriotic Youth).
