Intellectuals from Southern Kurdistan sign petition for freedom of Abdullah Öcalan

The signature campaign launched by Arab intellectuals demanding freedom for Kurdish People's Leader Abdullah Öcalan received intense support from Southern Kurdistan. More than 1250 intellectuals participated in the campaign with their signatures.

The Freedom for Öcalan Committee, founded by Arab intellectuals, launched a petition on October 29, 2020.

The campaign is expected to conclude on February 15, 2021. The Committee set the target of collecting 8 thousand signatures in a reference to the 8 thousand days in prison of Kurdish People's Leader Abdullah Öcalan.

More than 1250 intellectuals from Southern Kurdistan participated in the campaign with their signatures. Some of these signatures were made by hand and some over the internet.

Committee member Şoreş Xidir stated that the signatures were gathered in Sharezur, Raperin, Germiyan, Kirkuk, Sulaymaniyah and Hewler regions of Southern Kurdistan.

Xidir stated that the signatures were received from Duhok and Behdinan via email, adding that the total number of participants was not clear yet.

“Academicians, intellectuals, teachers, artists, politicians, parliamentarians, activists and respected people from Southern Kurdistan have participated in the campaign,” said Xidir.

The collected signatures will be submitted to the United Nations Secretary General, the Commissioner for the European Union, the Commissioner for African Union and the Secretary General of the Union of Arab States.
