KURDISTAN
Although the PKK declared a unilateral ceasefire more than two months ago, the peace organization Community Peacemaker Teams has recorded a drastic increase in Turkish military strikes in southern Kurdistan (northern Iraq).
The Initiative for Unity announced its establishment in Amed. The meeting, which began today, will last for two days.
HPG released the balance sheet for April, reporting 9,790 attacks from the air and ground, including with chemical weapons, phosphorus bombs, and banned weapons against guerrillas in ceasefire position. Four guerrillas were martyred in the attacks.
The Turkish army continues its attacks against guerrilla areas in northern Iraq despite a ceasefire declared by the PKK following Abdullah Öcalan's call for peace and democratic society.
