Silopi, eleven years ago, two people disappeared

Eleven years today People’s Democracy Party (HADEP) Silopi Branch Chair Serdar Tanýþ and Branch Executive Ebubekir Deniz disappeared. They were called into the Silopi District Gendarmerie Station in Þýrnak on 25 January 2001. Silopi Prosecutor’s Office ruled the case should be reassessed and sent it to Diyarbakýr Special Authorized Public Prosecution’s Office.

Reporting on the story, DIHA News Agency said that lawyer Tahir Elçi says that they expect a public prosecution against the suspects including retired Brigadier General Levent Ersöz, commander of the gendarmerie station at the time and arrested at the moment in the scope of Ergenekon case.

Whereas applications by Tanýþ and Deniz families as well as those by Kurdish politicians to prosecutors, the Turkish National Assembly Presidency, Prime Ministry and Presidency brought no results, European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) decided that Turkey violated the Article 2 of the European Convention on Human Rights and that the public offices were directly responsible for the disappearances of Tanýþ and Deniz according to the Article 13 of the same convention. Turkey was condemned to pay 172 thousand Euros of compensation to the families.

Tanýþ’s father said that he was called into Þýrnak Gendarmerie Regimental Command, at the time under the command of the retired Brigadier General Levent Ersöz and that he was threatened because of his son’s activities in HADEP. Also, before his disappearance Serdar Tanýþ wrote in a letter to HADEP Diyarbakýr Branch Chair Ali Ürküt about the repressions and threats both himself and his father had to face.

Deniz and Tanýþ’s lawyer Ýdris Tanýþ emphasizes that there is evidence of threats in telephone records, including these statements by Levent Ersöz: “Either you quit this job or I will kill you. My rank and my place are permanent, you can file a complaint all the way you want.” Worthy of notice to show authorities’ approach to this case, said Ýdris Tanýþ and continued “Neither against these records nor mentioned authorities have been investigated.” Þýrnak Gendarmerie Regimental Commander of the time Levent Ersöz has never been interrogated on the subject despite being arrested at the moment.

Also, Silopi District Gendarmerie Commander Major Süleyman Can, who allegedly involved in the case, was suspiciously killed in an armed conflict.

In an interview by Günlük Daily with a soldier who wanted to remain anonymous, it was claimed that Tanýþ and Deniz were extrajudicially killed near the River Tigris and buried in Dargeçit after being brought to Dargeçit Çelik Military Station.

Lawyer Tahir Elçi says that they are expecting a public prosecution against these allegations and responsible officials, particularly Levent Ersöz.
