This year‘s World Kobane Day means standing against the occupation of Afrin and increasing calls for the freedom of Abdullah Öcalan.
Kobane Reconstruction Board has published the appeal for the 1st November, World Kobane Day.
The appeal can be reached here.
The promoters ask people to share this appeal on social media to maximise participation.
The full appeal reads as follows:
"To the world public and to all of humanity,
On this year‘s World Kobane Day, claiming the legacy of the Kobane resistance means standing against the occupation of Afrin and increasing calls for the freedom of Abdullah Öcalan!
The so-called Islamic State’s attacks on the rooted peoples, cultures and veins of humanity of the Middle East took place in front of the eyes of global powers and regional states. Furthermore, by forcing all of us to become spectators and witnesses of these most brutal atrocities of our age, like violence, fear and desparation were forced into our lives.
Through the resistance of the women and men of the nameless, unrecognized besieged town of Kobane, who brought forward hope against desparation, resistance against fear, light against darkness, diversity against uniformity, this grim destiny was put to an end, of course with immense sacrifices. As in the personage of Arîn Mîrkan, this new history was able to be written through great sacrifices, courage, faith, and a deep love that defends life against death.
This honorable resistance does not belong to Kobane only, but came to belong to all of humanity.
The great resistance of Kobane was accompanied by the solidarity of peoples from all parts of the world and especially women. Apart from the global and regional forces, this new path created by peoples, oppressed identities, women, and revolutionaries, became the path of struggle and hope, of a mutual and joint life, opening the way for a sustainable unity, an internationalist line.
Ever since, November 1 has been declared as World Kobane Day, becoming the day on which these historical developments, international solidarity and cooperation spread to the squares and public spaces.
Kobane was not only the beginning of resistance, but also of a collective life proliferating in Rojava and Northern Syria. Against the global and regional powers which for their interests and profits turned the Middle East into an unliveable place, it became an oasis based on the peoples‘, oppressed identities‘, women’s strives for a peaceful, collective life. From the darkness of ISIS, it took up a hopeful road towards revolution for all peoples.
The source of inspiration, faith and thought for those who resisted in Kobane, for those who create the revolution in Rojava is the Kurdish people’s leader Abdullah Öcalan, who is held on the prison island of Imrali under torture and isolation. The paradigm which he articulated in the heavy conditions of isolation gives morale, hope and faith to the peoples of the Middle East and increasingly more to all of the oppressed.
Without understanding, acknowledging and claiming Öcalan, it is impossible to understand the resistance of Kobane and the spirit of the Rojava revolution today. Standing with the revolution in Rojava means standing with Öcalan, breaking his total isolation in prison and defending his freedom.
The efforts that ISIS could no longer engage in due to its defeat are currently continued by Erdogan’s Turkey. The occupation, looting and ethnic cleansing of Afrin are a direct continuation of ISIS‘ projects. The attacks on the Êzîdî people, who became victims of a genocide by ISIS, is part of this same mentality.
The spirit of ISIS is trying to keep itself alive in the body of Erdogan’s fascism. To struggle for Afrin’s liberation is in this sense a struggle against ISIS mentality. Creating a safe space for the Êzîdî people on the face of earth, to enable them to lead a self-determined life, to defend an autonomous Êzîdxan (name of the Êzîdî homeland), means to defend humanity against the darkness of ISIS.
Our resistance against darkness is continuing in a more determined manner.
Just as we resisted against ISIS, our freedom-loving struggle which defends a solidary life against the same ISIS mentality and system represented by Turkey’s fascism, which aspires to suffocate and hold hostage humanity in the Middle East, continues on behalf of all of humanity.
Now is the time for everybody to rise back on their feet more powerfully. Now again is the time to increase our unity and international solidarity against darkness. All streets and squares must be enchanted by the colorful voices of peoples against fascism and against the ISIS mentality. Now is the time to defend the freedom of Afrin, the freedom of Leader Öcalan, to vitalize the memory of Kobane’s resistance fighters and to act in their spirit.
Once again, we call on all peoples, women, oppressed classes and identities, all those brutalized and excluded by capitalist modernity, to salute the Kobane resistance on World Kobane Day of 2018 by condemning the occupation of Afrin and by defending the freedom of Leader Öcalan!"
