Bese Hozat: PKK is a women's party
Kurdistan Communities Union (KCK) Executive Council Co-President Bese Hozat spoke in an interview with ANF about what the 35 years of struggle the PKK (Kurdistan Workers' Party, Partiya Karkerên Kurdistan) has given has achieved in terms of women's freedom.
PKK is a women's party, Hozat said and added that; "This doesn't mean that the PKK was formed and led by women. What this means is the PKK's stance by freedom, equality and democracy. The women's participation in the PKK with their own will and their being the leading power in the freedom struggle has always held the PKK on a democratic, libertarian and socialist line. This is why and how the PKK has become a women's party today".
Hozat noted that the PKK ideology was grounded on Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan's sense of freedom which stands by equality of men and women against social gender inequality. PKK defends that a society cannot be free without free women. The 35 years old struggle the PKK has given is at the same time a struggle for women's liberation.
Sakine Cansız, a co-founder of the PKK (Kurdistan Workers' Party), Fidan Doğan, KNK (Kurdistan National Congress) Paris representative, and Leyla Şaylemez, member of the Kurdish youth movement, who were murdered in French capital Paris on 9 January 2013. What was Sakine Cansız's role in the PKK and women's liberation movement? What kind of a struggle will be you be giving in the coming term to ensure that light be shed on the execution of three Kurdish women?
Comrade Sara (Sakine) is our history of women's freedom, "Sakine's struggle is the women's freedom struggle”, as is said by our leader. Sara was not only a co-founder of the PKK, she was also a co-founder of women's liberation movement, a fighter who gave a struggle to raise the awareness of women, to train and to organize them. She introduced the sense of freedom, will, courage and stance to Kurdish women, and was followed by thousands of women who joined the ranks of freedom after her. She was the greatest leader of women in the march for freedom.
The bullets fired on three comrades of ours on 9 January were fired on the freedom struggle of women. The massacre was aimed at dealing a blow on the struggle and free will of women, and defeating the Kurdish freedom movement through the intimidation of women. The massacre which was carried out by NATO and the fascistic green gladio in Turkey was intended to integrate the Kurdish women and people into the system, to start a war among peoples, and to eliminate the ground for the solution of the Kurdish issue. In this sense, the massacre was the follow-up of the 1998 international conspiracy. It is apparent that it is not only the Turkish gladio but also the U.S., Germany and France that have a part in this massacre. The reason why the French state has shed no light on the killings so far is related with the fact that it is also guilty and this guilt is shared by the German state as well.
Kurds are supposed to unveil this brutal massacre and conspiracy and this requires a strong social reaction and resistance. This massacre which at the same time targeted the democratic values of European peoples should be reacted to by the European society as well.
The Paris killings is a brutal massacre committed by the mindset that burnt women to death in America in 1857. The massacre of women is not going to end unless women reveal the truth on this and other massacres and bring those responsible to account. Women and their organizations should enhance the struggle and strongly voice their reaction against Paris killings to shed light on this massacre and to prevent further execution of women.
Kurdish Women's Movement (KJB-Koma Jinen Blind) has recently held its sixth General Assembly. What has this assembly revealed in terms of women's determination in the freedom struggle?
The General Assembly witnessed broad discussions on the situation of women and the political process as well as women's role in the development of democratic politics and the building of a democratic system. The conslusion we reached is; democratic politics could be achieved by women's mind, which means social politics and the society's direct participation in politics and administration, and self-government. This is a political manner that can be improved only by women who are naturally not as individualist and proponent of government as much as men, and are more social, communal and democratic than men. The liberation of women and society cannot come into question without the improvement of democratic politics and the building of a democratic system. The politics needs to be brought through the male-dominant mindset. As the Kurdish women's movement, we reached a strong agreement on the subject.
During the general assembly, we defined the democratic autonomous system as a women's system for a free society, on contrary to the state's male-dominant governance system. We will be working for the building of the democratic autonomous system which will guarantee the women's movement's values that will be facing great risks unless this system is built. This is a law of nature, no value can be kept alive unless its system is constructed. The democratic system is the self-defense of values of freedom, a social system to enable women's values to be have existence and meaning. What we mean with social values is the communal, democratic, egalitarian and libertarian values of a society.
Education has an unquestionable role in the liberation of women for it helps people to become conscious which is a must for the attainment of free will and liberation from slavery. In this respect, we agreed on promoting women's academies and making every house a place of education.
Women's economic dependence on the system is another aspect that subjects them to a multiplied exploitation in the male-dominant system. This is also another factor that prevents women's liberation, concluded the general assembly which also laid too much stress on the importance of establishing economic communes and cooperatives.
We also reached an agreement on the importance of women's organization and forming a joint struggle front. The meeting of experiences of the women in the region and across the world will reveal a great synergy of a struggle in solidarity and unity. The meeting of the world's women in a common struggle front will also inspire the spirit and the basic dynamic of the global democratic movement.
