Protesting at the poor aid operation in Van, thousands of earthquake victims gathered and called on the governor to resign.
Earthquake victims closed the Silk Road to traffic and chanted slogans against the governor.
Police attacked the demonstrators with gas bombs. The number of demonstrators is increasing, as well as the number of soldiers and police units.
Tension was high at the Crisis Desk in Erciþ way and Maraþ Street where thousands of people demonstrated against the lack of aid.
Nearly 400 people died as a result of the earthquake, and today one more news emerged about the demolition of a large number of buildings that weren’t built in accordance with the earthquake regulations for risky areas.
In a parliamentary question by BDP former Group Deputy Chairman Fatma Kurtulan, two years ago, the BDP had asked to consider the earthquake risk in Van and about any precautions. The Ministry of Public Works and Settlement responded on January 4,2010 saying that “All kinds of precautions have been taken for the construction of all public and private buildings in our country in accordance with the Regulation on Buildings in Seismic Zones and other legislation provisions.”
In his answer the minister also stated that 14 schools, hospitals and service buildings were also strengthened. However around 100 schools, lodging buildings for teachers and students collapsed as a result of the Van earthquake on Sunday.
