20 thousand signed letters demanding an end to the aggravated isolation of Öcalan have been sent to CPT.
20 thousand signatures have been collected as part of the “I Reclaim my Leader, Land, Freedom” campaign launched by Kongreye Jinên Azad (Free Women's Congress, KJA) Istanbul Coordination in mid August. The signatures with a letter demanding an end to the aggravated isolation of Kurdish People's Leader Abdullah Öcalan have been sent to the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CPT).
Women gathered in front of the Galatasaray High School and unfurled banners which read “We condemn the October 9 international plot and demand an end to isolation” and “Women reclaim their leader, freedom and land, and insist on peace”.
Lawyer Ayşe Acınıklı spoke during the demonstration and stated that they came together to reveal the dimension of the isolation executed on İmralı. Acınıklı described the aggravated isolation imposed upon Öcalan since July 27, 2011 as a crime against humanity on which international institutions have long remained silent. She continued; "The resolution to the crisis in the country is selfevident. Isolation must be ended and talks for a resolution must be started immediately to this end."
Speaking after, HDP co-spokesperson Gülistan Koçyiğit remarked that the isolation imposed on Öcalan was actually an isolation imposed on a folk and peace, saying: "If this country is meant to be democratic and libertarian, this attitude must be ended in the first place."
Women joining the demo vowed that their democratic struggle will continue against the isolation, coup and state of emergency.
