Man kills ex-wife and two daughters in Erzurum

A 43-year-old man murdered his ex-wife and his two daughters in Erzurum.

Three women have been murdered in the province of Erzurum on Sunday. The victims are fifty-year-old Gülçin Karabıyık and her two daughters Burçin Arslan (24) and Cansu Arslan (17). The perpetrator is Raci Arslan, the ex-husband of Karabıyık and father of the two daughters who were all killed with several shots. Karabıyık and her younger daughter died at the scene of the crime in their apartment while the older daughter died of her injuries in a hospital in Erzurum.

The perpetrator initially tried to flee but was later shot by a sniper from the police special unit (PÖH) with two shots in his right hand and abdominal cavity. He was admitted to the Atatürk hospital and is not in mortal danger. It is said that the man has a total of 26 entries in the criminal register.

In Turkey, at least 29 women were murdered in November by men from their surroundings, and ten more women died under suspicious circumstances. Women's organizations associate the increased number of femicides with the legitimizing government discourse. The Turkish government, for example, opposes the Istanbul Convention to Combat Violence against Women and relativizes patriarchal violence.
