DAANES calls for international action to stop Turkish attacks on Tishrin Dam

DAANES warned that any attack on or destruction of the Tishrin Dam could lead to catastrophic consequences, including widespread flooding, significant loss of life, destruction of infrastructure, and severe environmental damage.

The Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (DAANES) appealed to international forces regarding the imminent danger facing the Tishrin Dam, as fears of its collapse increase due to the ongoing Turkish bombardment and the attacks by allied mercenaries.

The Autonomous Administration stated, "Since the fall of the Assad regime on December 8, 2024, factions supported by Turkey have continued to attack the Tishrin Dam and its surroundings. Turkish warplanes and drones have targeted areas around the dam, escalating the conflict between the Manbij Military Council and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) on one side and the so-called Syrian National Army on the other."

The statement continued, "It is evident that these attacks aim to destabilize the areas of the Democratic Autonomous Administration and support Turkey's ambitions to occupy more Syrian territory. The factions involved in these hostile actions have shown a pattern of violence in service to Turkey’s objectives, which is evident in the violations against the people of Manbij since the factions took control of it in December 2024."

The Autonomous Administration pointed out that "the violence practiced by Turkish forces and their allied factions has raised concerns about the safety of the Tishrin Dam facility. The potential targeting of this vital infrastructure once again poses a direct threat to the lives of hundreds of civilians in the region. We warn that any attack on or destruction of the dam could lead to catastrophic consequences, including widespread flooding, significant loss of life, destruction of infrastructure, and severe environmental damage."

DAANES stressed that the collapse of the dam would not only affect the local population but could also have devastating effects on the entire region, including service infrastructure and public and private property.

“The Tishrin Dam is a vital resource for generating energy and providing drinking water. With a length of 1.5 kilometers and a capacity of 1.9 billion cubic meters of water, it plays a crucial role in sustaining the livelihoods of the people of North and East Syria. It has already sustained damage in recent years, impairing its operational capacity, and any further damage could render the dam inoperative, leading to long-term effects on the stability of the entire region."

The Democratic Autonomous Administration stressed the urgent need for immediate intervention and pressure on Turkey to "stop its aggressive actions and ensure the protection of civilians and vital infrastructure." It called for a comprehensive ceasefire in Syrian territory to achieve peace and stability.

It also emphasized the importance of international efforts to address the Syrian crisis, calling for a political solution that guarantees the participation of all Syrian parties "regardless of their ethnic, religious, or sectarian affiliations" in forming a new and inclusive Syrian government.

In conclusion, the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria expressed hope that the international community and key actors in the Syrian issue would recognize the gravity of the situation in the region and urged them to prevent a humanitarian disaster that could harm millions of lives in the event of the Tishrin Dam’s collapse.
