At least 37 women murdered in Turkey in May

We Will Stop Femicide Platform announced that 37 women have been murdered in Turkey in the month of May.

‘We Will Stop Femicide Platform’ announced its report on femicide for the month of May. According to the report, 37 women were murdered last month, while abuse against children and sexual violence continued. “Each day, more than one woman was killed and no precaution is taken to prevent women’s killings.”

The report refuted Turkish Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu’s statement which argued a “39 percent decrease in violence-related women’s deaths”, stressing that daily reports on women’s killings, sexual violence and child abuse reveal an exact opposite reality.

The report emphasized that femicide and other forms of violence are increasing more and more as the perpetrators of women’s killings are not exposed, reasons behind such cases are not determined and fair trial processes do not take place.

The report indicated an increase in women’s killings in comparison to the previous month, noting that the dimension of violence and killings has become even more felonious. 13 cases of women’s killings were suspicious and 12 others were not identified.

Most of the women’s killings in May took place in Bursa (7), Edirne (3) and Istanbul (2), while 17 women were subjected to sexual violence, as much as reflected in the media.

On the other hand, 23 children were reported abused in May but the real numbers in this regard are actually much higher.
