Another case of self-immolation in South Kurdistan

A 30-year-old woman was dead after she set herself on fire in Kelar, a district of Germiyan province in South Kurdistan.

A young woman with the name Arezu Hisên, born in 1987, set her body on fire on the September 2.  the second day of the Feast of the Sacrifice, in the Gazîno neighborhood of Germiyan's district Kelar.

Germiyan's general police command said that according to the family’s statement Hisen set herself on fire.

Local media reports that Hisen’s psychology got disturbed because of the pressure her family which led consequently self-immolation.

A source close to the family who asked not to be named said: "Arezu was a skilled and courageous girl. But the family treated her very often coldly and unfair. Because of the violence and pressure of the family she wanted to run away from them. And that was also the reason that she ran away from home some days ago."

The same source claimed that the family had a role in Arezu's self-immolation and said: "Arezu wanted to leave the country illegally. The smuggler, however, deceived her, he took her money and just left her behind somewhere. Arezu contacted thereupon her mother and returned back home with her mother's help. But two days later her family claimed that she set fire to herself."

According to the Independent Human Rights Council of the Kurdistan Region between July 2 and August 2 alone, 5 women have been murdered, one woman has been found dead, one woman has been wounded and one woman committed self-immolation in South Kurdistan.

Given the incidents reported on daily on news programs in South Kurdistan however, the numbers of the cases of violence against women are in fact much higher than presented by the council.
