Students from Afrin protest against ENKS

While Turkey imposes the Turkish language in the regions it has occupied where Kurdish education is prohibited, the Kurdish National Council in Syria (ENKS) wants the education system to return to pre-2011 period.

Afrin Democratic Education Committee organised a demonstration in protest at the ENKS (Kurdish National Council in Syria) demand for the annulment of the Kurdish education system.

Members of the Democratic Education Committees of Afrin and Shehba organised a demonstration in protest at the ENKS (Syrian Kurdish Council) demand for the annulment of the Kurdish education system.

Hundreds of students who were displaced from Afrin together with their families and are currently staying in the Berxwedan Camp in Shehba joined the protest.

The press statement was read by Şîlan Ala, a member of the Afrin Democratic Education Committee.

Highlighting the fact that the Kurdish people have paid great prices for the defence of their mother tongue, Ala said; “Thousands of students are receiving Kurdish language education today thanks to the sacrifices made so far. This is a legitimate right that cannot ever be denied.”

The students strongly condemned the ENKS’ opposition to education in Kurdish language. The press statement was concluded with the slogans “Bijî zimanê kurdî” [Long live Kurdish language] and “Bijî berxwedana Serdemê” [Long live the resistance of Serdem].
