The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) struck several bases of the Turkish army and its jihadist auxiliary forces in response to Turkish air strikes against the autonomous region of northern and eastern Syria. At least fourteen members of the occupying forces were killed as a result of the actions, the SDF said in a statement on Saturday, stressing that: "We are using our right to legitimate self-defence."
According to the SDF statement, the actions took place on Wednesday (27 December). The targets included a base of the Turkish state in the village of Aziziyah in Til Temir. According to the SDF, eight Turkish soldiers were killed, and a further four were injured.
On the same day, fighters of the Manbij Military Council targeted a base in the village of Al-Jatal (Çetel) to the north of Manbij. In the course of the action, an approximately twenty-minute battle broke out between the military council and Islamist mercenaries allied with Turkey. Four jihadists were killed, and four others were injured.
The fighters of the Manbij Military Council clashed with the gangs of the Turkish state in the village of Mehsenli (al-Mohsenli), north of the city, after targeting a base belonging to the Turkish-backed mercenaries. As a result, 2 mercenaries were killed, and 2 others were wounded.
The retaliatory strikes by the SDF against enemy bases in the Turkish occupation zone are a response to the wave of airstrikes by NATO partner Turkey during the Christmas holidays. According to the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), Turkey carried out 58 airstrikes between 23 and 26 December against settlements, the infrastructure supplying the population with energy and food, health facilities, construction companies, a printing house, commercial enterprises and security force checkpoints. Most of the bombings were carried out by drones, while fighter jets were used in seven cases. At least ten people were killed and dozens more survived, some of whom were seriously injured.
