Kurdish activist sentenced to six months in prison in Sanandaj

The Iranian regime’s crackdown on the Kurdish population continues unabated.

Kurdish labour rights activist Amjad Geryakhiz has been sentenced to six months in prison and handed a two-year suspended sentence by the Islamic Revolutionary Court in Sanandaj.

The Kurdistan Human Rights Network (KHRN) reported that the court convicted Geryakhiz on charges including “propaganda against the state”, and formally notified him of the verdict on 7 June.

Geryakhiz, from Sanandaj, Kurdistan Province, was arrested on 22 January 2025 by agents of the Ministry of Intelligence in Sanandaj following strikes and protests triggered by the death sentences issued for Kurdish political prisoners Pakhshan Azizi and Warisha Moradi.

He was held for several weeks at a detention facility operated by the Ministry of Intelligence before being transferred to Sanandaj Central Prison, and was released on bail on 25 February 2025.
