Two children, aged 14-15, were playing in Yekmal village of Uludere when they stepped on a mine. The two children, whose names could not be learned, lost their life.
The little victims were taken to Şırnak State Hospital morgue by helicopters and the families were not able to see them.
Mines in Turkey
According to the 1999 report of the Landmine Monitor, the number of land-mines in Turkey is said to be around 1 million.
Bu the number increased to 3 million with the landmines still to be destroyed in warehouses.
There are 3,174 mines in Ağrı, Ardahan, Batman, Bingöl, Bitlis, Amed, Antep, Hakkâri, Hatay, Iğdır, Kars, Mardin, Siirt, Urfa, Şırnak, Dersim and Van. In addition, Turkey ranks first among states party to the Ottawa Convention when it comes the presence of anti-personnel mines.
