Saleh Muslim: I doubt Assad used chemical weapons

Speaking to Reuters about the latest developments in Syria, Saleh Muslim, leader of the Democratic Union Party (PYD), said that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is not that stupid to use chemical weapons while he is under observation of the UN, referring to the alleged chemical weapons attack near Damascus last Wednesday.

Muslim said that he was not sure that this could be true and believed that it is explained in this way because some people want external forces to carry out military interventions to Syria. He said he doubted the Syrian president would resort to using such weapons when he felt he had the upper hand in the country's civil war.

"Syrian Regime has chemical weapons but Assad is not that stupid to use them while UN’s experts of chemical weapons are just 5 km away from Damascus. Assad considers himself as the part who won the internal war. That is why I have concerns about the claims that he used chemical weapons", Muslim said and remarked that the attack was aimed at framing Assad and provoking an international reaction.

Muslim suggested "some other sides who want to blame the Syrian regime, who want to show them as guilty and then see action" lay behind the chemical attack, which has led to speculation that Western countries will order a military response.
