Numerous SGDF members detained in Ankara

Following an anti-imperialist demonstration in Ankara, police raided numerous homes and detained members of the socialist youth association SGDF.

On the orders of the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, police in Turkey's capital have stormed numerous homes and detained members of the socialist youth association SGDF. The background is apparently the "Revolutionary Demonstration against Imperialism" that took place on May 26 at the Middle East Technical University (ODTÜ) in Ankara. It is unknown what the detainees are specifically accused of. During the raids, the interior of the houses was vandalized and there were verbal assaults by the police against those present.

Those detained by name are Hivda Selen, Ece Şimşek, Berivan Kaylu, Yaprak Delfin Turgan, Mert Orhan Ömerbeyoğlu, Dilan Mollaahmetoğlu, Berfin Babaoğlu, Ebrar Uz and Lokman Sekvan Ozğan. It is assumed that the number of detentions may still increase.

Federation of Socialist Youth Associations

The Federation of Socialist Youth Associations (SGDF) is the youth federation of the Socialist Party of the Oppressed (ESP). ESP has become known especially with the Gezi protests. One of its founding members is the imprisoned former co-chair of the HDP, Figen Yüksekdağ. In 2014, ESP joined the HDP (Peoples' Democratic Party), which functions as an umbrella party.

SGDF was the target of a bomb attack on July 20, 2015. The ISIS attack in Suruç district of Urfa killed 33 people, most of them young. The activists had gathered at the Amara cultural center and wanted to hold a press conference before leaving for Kobanê. The planned trip to Kobanê was supposed to be an act of solidarity. The young people wanted to take children's toys and humanitarian aid supplies to the ISIS-destroyed city. 104 other people were injured in the attack.
