A memorial was held in Toronto for Sırrı Süreyya Önder, who passed away on 3 May. Önder was a member of the Imralı Delegation of the Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) and Deputy Speaker of the Parliament. The memorial was organized by the Democratic Kurdish Community Center of Canada.
After a minute's silence, the message sent by Önder Apo (Abdullah Öcalan) was read. Kadri Ertuğrul, co-chair of the Democratic Kurdish Community Center of Canada, said that he worked with Önder in Istanbul and added: "With his humble life, he remained among the people as one of them, tirelessly defending peace in the political arena. He taught us how to convey the message of building peace to all peoples with a humorous yet deeply thought-provoking style. We have lost a comrade, a worker of peace, and we are saddened. From here, we promise our comrade that we will surely realize the peace he longed for."
A Canadian resident named Mahir, originally from Adıyaman, expressed condolences and said they had suffered a great loss. He shared a memory of meeting Önder during an election campaign in Adıyaman.
During the event, after prayers from the Qur’an were recited for Önder and all martyrs of Kurdistan, a video presentation on Sırrı Süreyya Önder’s life was shown. Visits and commemorations continued throughout the evening.
