Gever municipality in debt after trustee government

State-appointed trustees have left debts in the municipalities they have run, taking away the rightful place to HDP elected co-mayors.

State-appointed trustee in Gever Municipality left behind a record debt of 680 million Turkish lira (some 100 million euros). The newly elected HDP co-mayors said that they will share detailed information in the coming days.

One such city is Gever, in Hakkari province, where debt is particularly high.

After the victory by HDP Remziye Yaşar and İrfan Sarı, at the 31 March local elections, the newly elected co-mayors held a conference to share the first results of their investigation on the state of finance.

Promising a more detailed report that will be presented to citizens in the coming days, Municipal co-mayor Remziye Yaşar, said that the seized municipalities were actually ransacked by trustees. "We will be in pursuit of those responsible of such mishandling of resources.”

After Yaşar, co-chairman İrfan Sarı spoke. "We will detail the situation of the municipality at the time of the trustee. There has been mishandling in resources concerning drinking water and sewage projects for the equivalent of 680 million TL. We will investigate the legal dimension and take the necessary steps."
