German MPs to visit Turkey

A delegation of German MPs will be visiting Turkey this week. The visit will focus on the anti-democratic practices in Turkey and the Incirlik crisis.

As tensions rise in the Germany-Turkey relationship due to the Incirlik crisis, a delegation from the Federal Parliament of Germany will be visiting Turkey this week. Federal Parliament Vice President Greens MP Claudia Roth will be heading the delegation with MPs from various political parties. The delegation wants to meet with politicians from the government and opposition parties, NGOs and media representatives.

DEPUTIES REACT TO ANTIDEMOCRATIC PRACTICES

German MPs will be visiting between May 25 to 28 and aim to discuss matters of democracy and human rights and consider possibilities to further political dialogue.

German MPs had criticized the antidemocratic developments in the areas of democracy, human rights and press freedom in Turkey and had reacted harshly when permission to visit German soldiers on duty in Incirlik air base wasn’t given. German MPs not being allowed to visit German soldiers stationed in the Incirlik air base as part of the fight against ISIS is one of the largest points of disconcert.

The German MPs’ Turkey visit is going to take place just before Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel and Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan are expected to meet in Brussels.
