EU officials to visit Turkey

Presidents of the European Council and the European Commission will visit Turkey next week.

Charles Michel, President of the European Council and Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission will visit Turkey next week.

The visit will take place on April 6, according to a spokesperson for Charles Michel. The European Council and Commission presidents are expected to meet Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Charles Michel and Ursula von der Leyen held a videoconference with the Turkish President on March 19.

Last week at an EU summit held online, 27 countries debated over the relations with Turkey.

Despite the unprecedentedly severe human rights violations in Turkey, the EU decided to postpone sanctions on Turkey again. EU officials said that positive signals were coming from Turkey and they wanted to see whether the positive outlook would continue. The EU officials revealed that the partnership with Turkey would be discussed in detail at a summit to take place in June.

The EU will also continue to provide financial support to Turkey as part of a controversial refugee deal in 2016 criticized by human rights organizations.
