Demo for Shengal in front of Iraqi consulate in Berlin

Yazidi organizations have protested in front of the Iraqi consulate in Berlin demanding recognition of an autonomous status for Shengal and warning of an escalation in the region.

In front of the Iraqi consulate in Berlin, activists demanded the recognition of the autonomy of Shengal. The rally was promoted by the Central Association of Yezidi Associations (NAV-YÊK) and the umbrella organization of the Yazidi Women's Council (SMJÊ). The participants protested against the agreement reached last October between Baghdad and South Kurdistan’s ruling party KDP on the future of the Yazidi settlement area. The Iraqi government in Baghdad had recently set a deadline of April 1 for the withdrawal of the autonomous security forces.

Speeches pointed out that the security forces (Asayîşa Êzîdxanê) and the YBŞ and YJŞ defense forces were established after the genocide and femicide committed by the ISIS in Shengal in 2014. "As Yazidis living in Europe, we demand the recognition of Shengal's autonomy," a speech said and underlined that this demand is in conformity with the Iraqi constitution. The Yazidi organizations warned of a new massacre in the region and said that a military solution was not possible.
