Open homophobia in Turkey has reached a frightening dimension. At Boğaziçi University in Istanbul, a solidarity demonstration was attacked by police, and several people were detained because of rainbow flags.

Turkish police attacked a solidarity demonstration at Istanbul's Boğaziçi University and detained at least twelve people. The reason for the arrests was the rainbow flags that were displayed by the crowd.

During the demonstration, the students demanded the release of fellow students who had been arrested during protests against the appointment of Erdogan's favorite Melih Bulu as rector of the renowned Istanbul university. For this demand, the students have gone on strike and boycotted classes since Monday. Activities are constantly taking place on the South Campus of the university. Today's demonstration was also a protest against disciplinary proceedings initiated against students.

The demonstration was attacked by police on the way to the North Campus. Initially, four people with rainbow flags were detained. When the other students demanded their release, eight more violent arrests followed.

The students' protests are still ongoing. The entrance to the North Campus is cordoned off with police barriers, no one can enter or leave the area.
