Attack on HDP in Izmir: Images from the crime scene emerge

HDP member Deniz Poyraz was murdered today by a Turkish fascist at the party headquarters in Izmir. Now images of the crime scene have emerged, showing numerous bullet holes in the premises.

The Mezopotamya news agency (MA) has published images of the HDP headquarters in Izmir, where party member Deniz Poyraz was murdered today by an avowed fascist. The images show numerous bullet holes in the premises of the HDP provincial association.

The attack on the party building occurred this morning. The attacker, Onur Gencer, entered the premises at around 10:30 a.m. local time and shot around. The premises, which were under round-the-clock police surveillance, were set on fire by the fascist before he left the building and surrendered to police. The attack represents a high point in the attacks on the HDP.

HDP co-chair Mithat Sancar has spoken in Ankara about the attack on the party headquarters in Izmir and the murder of Deniz Poyraz. According to Sancar, a board meeting with about forty people was supposed to take place in the building today. The meeting was postponed at short notice. "So it was not just about murdering any person. There was meant to be a massacre," he said.

Deniz Poyraz was born in 1983 in the Kurdish province of Mardin. Her entire family is politically active, and three of her siblings are in prison. In 2008 she survived a fascist-motivated lynching attempt in Izmir. At that time, several supporters of the extreme right-wing organization "Grey Wolves" forced their way into her parents' house in Kadifekale and tried to throw Poyraz off the balcony. Neighbors heard her cries for help and managed to save her life. DIHA news agency, a predecessor of MA, which has been banned since 2016, had reported on this at the time.
