Afrin attack in the Swedish Parliament

MPs in Sweden are protesting the Turkish state’s attacks on Afrin and demanding the government condemn Turkey and take the matter to the United Nations and the European Union.

Greens MP Jabar Amin and Left Party MP Amineh Kakabaveh demanded a discussion in the Swedish Parliament on the Turkish state’s attacks on Afrin, that Sweden condemn Turkey and take the matter to the United Nations and the European Union.

In the written inquiry Amin submitted, he stated that Recep Tayyip Erdoğan whose crimes against humanity in recent years are known worldwide is now targeting Afrin: “This tie he is attacking Afrin, on the border with Turkey and where Kurds live. The Turkish army is attacking Afrin with fighter jets and artilleries. The Turkish army is attacking from the north and the west while Islamist groups supported by Turkey attack from the east and the south. The situation is quite dire, and the outside world should take a stand.”

Amin said many countries have taken a stand against Turkey’s crimes against humanity and destabilization of the region and gave France taking the matter to the UN agenda as an example.

“TURKEY SHOULD BE GIVEN A PROTEST MEMORANDUM”

Amin said the Swedish government supporting France’s stance is positive but insufficient: “The Swedish government should do more. The government should condemn the attacks on Afrin that violate international law. The Turkish ambassador should be summoned and given a protest memorandum.”

Left Party MP Amineh Kakabeveh took Turkey’s attack on Afrin to the parliament’s agenda with another written inquiry and demanded a discussion on the matter and the condemning of the AKP.

Kakabaveh stated that the Kurds, defending their lands against ISIS, formed democratic cantons where women and other peoples of the region play a central role. Kakabaveh pointed out that peace in the region is under threat by ISIS, the Syrian regime and most recently Turkey.

“TRUE TARGET IS THE KURDISH PEOPLE IN ROJAVA”

Kakabaveh said Erdoğan blames YPG/YPJ of being “terrorists” to legitimize his attacks on Rojava and added: “The true target is the Kurdish people in Rojava.”

Kakabaveh said the AKP doesn’t want the YPJ, who achieved great success in the region and organized tens of thousands of women, or the democratic cantons in the region and added that Erdoğan sees the system that liberates women as a threat against his own regime.

Kakabaveh stated that Erdoğan, like other populist leaders, needs a scapegoat to hide his true intentions, to realize his longings for dictatorship and to cover up his crimes against fundamental principles of democracy: “That is why he accuses all Kurdish organizations, minority peoples and socialist groups of being terrorists.”

Kakabaveh stressed that Turkey has violated international law with the attack on Afrin and has fanned the flames of Syria’s civil war as war crimes and human rights violations continue.

Kakabaveh demanded the Swedish Foreign Minister Margot Wallström condemn Erdoğan’s bombing and attacks againt Afrin and take the issue to the United Nations agenda.

“ERDOĞAN SEES WOMEN AS THREATS”

Kakabaveh answered ANF’s questions on the inquiry and the developments in Afrin and stated that they consider the attack against Afrin as an attack against the will of the Kurds and other peoples in the region and said: “Erdoğan has the radical Islamist viewpoint and sees the cantons where women play a leading role and the emancipation of women as a threat against himself and his regime.”

“IT’S TIME TO TELL ERDOĞAN TO STOP”

Kakabaveh said the Swedish government and the European Union should stand with the Kurdish people and other oppressed peoples in the face of the attacks against Afrin and continued: “Now it’s time for Sweden and the European Union to tell Erdoğan to stop.”

“TURKEY IS VIOLATING INTERNATIONAL LAW”

Social Democratic Workers' Party MPs are also protesting the Turkish state’s invasion of Afrin.

Anders Österberg and Serkan Köse spoke to the ANF about the matter and stated that by attacking Afrin, Turkey is violating international laws and further destabilizing the situation in Syria.

Köse said, “Instead of considering the Kurds a threat, Turkey should see them as equal citizens and respect the will of the Kurds,” and warned that attacks against Afrin will deepen the war.

Österberg stressed that attacks against Kurds, who displayed a heroic resistance in Kobanê onwards and defended their lands against ISIS gangs, are unacceptable.
