Özdemir visits Strasbourg activists: Europe should do more

Cansu Özdemir, co-chair of the Hamburg State Parliament Group of Die Linke visited hunger strikers in Strasbourg.

A group of 14 activists are on hunger strike in Strasbourg to demand the end of isolation against Kurdish people’s leader Abdullah Öcalan.

The group joined the hunger strike led by HDP Hakkari MP Leyla Güven who is approaching day 100 of her fast.

Cansu Özdemir, co-chair of the Hamburg State Parliament Group of Die Linke, saw for herself the situation of the hunger strikers and confirmed that their health is quickly deteriorating.

‘Reactions are insufficient’

Until now, said Özdemir, the reactions to the hunger strike and the demand of the activists have been insufficient. Europe should take its responsibility and address Turkey to urge it to respond to activists, instead of favouring their economic relations with Ankara.

Özdemir confirmed that she had presented a motion in Parliament to urge the German government to act for the removal of the isolation imposed on the Kurdish people's leader in the parliament, and added that unfortunately this motion remains closed within parliament.

Ending her remarks Özdemir added that the pressure and actions of the Kurdish people would lead to a solution of the Kurdish question.
