YPG General Command said in a written statement that ISIS gang organization used chemical weapons against the fighting positions of the combatants of the People's Defense Units (YPG) and the civilian population in the neighborhood of Salihiya in Hasakah city on June 28, 2015.
The General Command of the People's Defense Units said they established a team to document events, collect samples and live witnesses from those who have been subjected to bombardment and the team documented by videos, photographs and witnesses as well.
People's Defense Units have recovered evidence of these criminal actions and are currently investigating to determine the precise nature of the toxins involved but have not been able to determine the quality of the chemical toxic used by ISIS, because the lack of potential and the investigation is still continuing to define the exact nature of the chemical toxin used.
The statement said that ISIS fired several makeshift chemical projectiles into Al Salahya neighborhood, Al Hasakah city, targeting an area densely populated by civilians on 28 June.
ISIS also lobbed chemical weapons at YPG positions south of the Tel Brak town.
Upon impact, the projectiles released a yellow gas with a strong smell of rotten onions. The ground immediately around the impact sites was stained with an olive green liquid that turned to a golden yellow after exposure to sunshine, YPG General Command said.
YPG troops exposed to the gas experienced burning of the throat, eyes, and nose, combined with severe headaches, muscle pain and impaired concentration and mobility. Prolonged exposure to the chemicals also caused vomiting.
All Defense Units soldiers exposed to the gas were admitted to hospital for tests and subsequently released since symptoms did not persist, YPG said, adding that the doctors’ report confirmed that YPG soldiers were exposed to chemicals toxic.
During the last four weeks, YPG forces have captured industrial grade gas masks from ISIS fighters, confirming that they are prepared and equipped for chemical warfare along this sector of the front.
The statement added that YPG is continuing to investigate the ISIS use of chemical weapons, with the support of an international team of experts from Conflict Armament Research and Sahan Research.
Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) also documented ISIS use of gas during its shelling that targeted the village of Rajm al- Tfihi located in the south of Tal Brak town in the province of al- Hasakah in 28 June. According to doctors’ testimony and analyses, SOHR knew that the shelling by gas caused vomiting, suffocation and eye-burn suffered by 12 YPG fighters.
The doctors’ testimonies and laboratory analysis confirmed that ISIS used gas in its shelling on the village; it is unknown whether the gas used during bombardment is chlorine or another kind of gas. Information also reported to SOHR that ISIS used gas when they targeted the neighborhood of al- Salhiyyah in the city of al- Hasakah.
SOHR demanded UN Security Council to send international commissions of inquiry in order to detect the use of gases by IS and the regime troops across Syria, and to refer the perpetrators to specialist international courts.
