What is going on around Aleppo?

When around 2 months ago the UN envoy De Mistura announced plans for a ‘freeze zone’ in Aleppo, the second city of Syria, to halt the conflict, the Al Nusra Front went into action.

Since around 2 months ago the UN envoy De Mistura announced plans for a ‘freeze zone’ in Aleppo, the second city of Syria, to halt the conflict, there have been new developments. As soon as this announcement was made, the Al Nusra Front went into action.

A short time after this plan was announced, the impression was given that Al Nusra was fighting the Syrian regime in Idlib. The regime withdrew from some areas leaving heavy weaponry such as tanks and artillery to Al Nusra. With these weapons Al Nusra attacked the Islamic Front group, then went into action around Aleppo.

Nubul Zehra Scenario

Al Nusra was activated following the defeat of ISIS in Kobanê. This was a plan devised to attack and occupy Afrin canton. Meetings took place in the Turkish city of Gaziantep as part of efforts to unite Islamic Front groups with Al Nusra. As part of this scenario Al Nusra attacked      Nubul Zehra. This was combined with a press campaign against the Afrin defence forces.

Damascus Front formed

When these plans did not bear fruit, international forces had the Islamic Front, which had previously been the FSA, change its name to the Damascus Front. Since the Kurds are seeking a solution that will benefit all communities and oppressed peoples, the YPG has reached an agreement with the Damascus Front. This created speculation, with some circles trying to incite the regime against the Kurds.

Regime mounts attacks of Damascus Front

Three days ago the Ba’athist regime launched attacks on areas controlled by the Damsacus Front in Aleppo. The regime has not attacked areas under the control of Al Nusra or ISIS.

Part of the plan?

Attacks are continuing after the announcement by De Mistura of the ‘freeze zone’ in Aleppo to bring an end to fighting. It is difficult to say where these attacks will lead. Are they part of the plan?
