Two siblings, two armies, one purpose

Agît Amed joined the PKK in 2011-2012, having been influenced by the Rojava revolution. Following the ISIS attacks on Sinjar on 3 August he volunteered to go to Sinjar. He says: “Our leader made an appeal and for us this was an order. Many forces ignored what was happening in Sinjar out of their own interests, but we came here a day after the massacre and we are still here. We won’t leave before Sinjar is liberated and the defence of Yazidi Kurds is guaranteed.”

Agît Amed said he felt proud when he heard his sister Amara had joined the ranks of the YPJ during the resistance in Kobanê.

‘I will never forget the heroism and self-sacrifice I saw in Kobanê’

His sister Amara joined the resistance in Kobanê in July 2014. Temmuz ayında dahil oluyor. I remember when a comrade was mortally wounded. We knew our comrade was going to die, but there was no way we were going to allow her to fall into the hands of ISIS,” she added.

She said it was the first time she had seen her brother for 4 years, adding that they were in two different armies, but with the same aim. “Agît is in the ranks of the HPG, fighting ISIS gangs in Sinjar, while I’m in the ranks of the YPG-YPJ, but I’m proud that I’m involved in the same struggle as my brother,” she said.
