Kurdistan Regional Parliament to work on Constitution draft
After the beginning of the 5th term of Parliament in the Kurdistan Region, the parliament's presidency took the first steps to draft the Constitution of the Kurdistan Region.
The President of the Parliament recently met with President of Kurdistan Region Nechirvan Barzani, KDP President Massoud Barzani, PUK Deputy Secretary General Kosret Resul Eli, Gorran Movement President Omer Seyid Eli, Komela Islamic President Eli Bapir and representatives of the other political parties.
The Kurdistan Region Parliamentary Presidency requested political party groups and officials in all of its meetings to support the work of the Constitutional Preparatory Commission of the Kurdistan Region.
Ebas Fetah, Member of the Parliamentary Affairs Committee of the Kurdistan Region Parliament said: "While drafting the constitution is a parliamentary task, political parties need an agreement on this issue. The purpose of the parliamentary meetings is to speed up the writing of the Constitution."
In 2015, preparations were made in the Parliament of the Kurdistan Region to redact the Constitution.
In the same year the Parliament of the Kurdistan Region established a 30-person commission to redact the bill and gave 90 days to the commission to complete its work. The Commission approved the 73 articles of the constitutional project which was not ratified.
The Kurdistan Region Parliament term ended on 12 October 2015. Since the parliamentary work stopped for two years, the Constitutional work also stopped.
The Kurdistan Region Parliamentary Presidency now wants to draft the Constitution of the Kurdistan Region once again.
