Kobanê Kurdish Language Institution mobilizes for education

“Education is a part of the reconstruction", says Kobanê Kurdish Language Institute worker Perwer Hemo.

Kobanê Kurdish Language Institution worker Perwer Hemo, who is attending the “Language and Education Policies Workshop” organised by Democratic Society Congress (DTK) in Amed, provided information about the works for education in the war-town city of West Kurdistan, Rojava.

Hemo said that Kobanê Kurdish Language Institution has started works actively amidst ongoing plannings for the reconstruction of the city after its liberation from the ISIS gangs.

“Education is indeed a part of the reconstruction. We have sped up our works to continue the suspended education to meet the needs of the children that have recently returned with their families.”

Perwer Hemo said service has education at three schools in Kobanê city centre following a clearance of mines and bombs, providing service for around 4 thousand children registered so far.

Hemo said the same works were being performed currently in the villages liberated outside the city, informing that some 50 schools in the liberated villages have started education. She added that the number of students was increasing with the ongoing returns.

'Lack of material'

Hemo said that besides Kurdish language education to children, Kobanê Kurdish Language Institute also provided lessons to adults on politics, history, culture and similar subjects.

She said they were also organised in other parts of life, sending educators to asayish (public security) and culture and youth institutions, and started education at certain levels.

Hemo pointed out that life in Kobanê has gradually turned back to normal now and children going to school every day, adding; “80 percent of the city has been demolished. We are providing education in schools with holes on their walls. We also have a considerable lack of material including notebook, pencil, schoolbooks. The only aid we receive is whar arrives us over North Kurdistan.”

Hemo noted that Arabic was also provided as a foreign language at Kobanê schools, and that the number of classrooms in schools will be increased in the coming period.
