Co-mayors of Hakkari and Van's Edremit district municipality, who were detained and remanded in custody last week, have been exiled from Van M Type Prison where they have been held since. Hakkari co-mayor Dilek Hatipoğlu and Edremit co-mayor Rojbin Sevil Çetin have been sent to Closed Women's Prison in Turkish capital Ankara.
Lawyer Ümit Dede who learned about the case when he went to Van M Type Prison for a meeting with his clients, said this was a wrong decision as the detainees who were not convicted yet needed to be held in a prison close to where they stood trial.
Recalling that co-mayors of Amed's Sur and Silvan district municipalities were also sent to a prison in Ankara last week, lawyer Ümit Dede said; "We were told that their referral was made on grounds of security but there is no such a problem. This is a particular case implemented for co-mayors".
