Former member of Ergani Municipal Council sentenced to 8 years in prison

Former member of Ergani Municipal Council Ceylan Aslan was sentenced to 8 years in prison on alleged charges of "being a member of an illegal organization", meaning the PKK.

The final hearing of Ceylan Aslan, a former member of Ergani Municipal Council, was held at an Diyarbakır Court on Wednesday. Aslan is accused of “being a member of an illegal organization” and “violating Law No. 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations” due to her participation in the press briefing on the hunger strike initiated by Democratic Society Congress (DTK) Co-Chair Leyla Güven in prison in 2018 and in the demonstrations and events organized by her party.

Ceylan Aslan, who was dismissed by the Ministry of Interior, did not attend the hearing, while her lawyer Seda Zengin was present. The prosecution repeated the final opinion presented in the previous hearing and demanded Ceylan Aslan to be sentenced.

The court sentenced Ceylan Aslan to 7 years and 6 months for “being a member of an illegal organization” and to an additional 6 months for “violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations No 2911”.
